About Biothane

Biothane is USA-made brand of coated polyester webbing made

Honed for it's unique properties, this webbing is waterproof, stink-proof, durable and essentially a more hygienic alternative material to leather for pet gear .

Also known as unicorn leather but we identify it more as mermaid leather (cos waterproof!), this coated webbing has been used in the equestrian industry for horse bridle but has since gained popularity in the pet industry in the forms of collars and leashes.

Waterproof: Polyester as a material has a low water absorption properties is further sandwiched and encased in a PVC coating.

Stink-proof: The PVC rubber-like coating mimics the look of leather but does not absorb smells like it, so you don't have to worry about stinky collars and leashes. That's the beauty! It is considered a vegan alternative and we love that no animal gets hurt in the process of making Biothane webbing!

Durable: Proven to be stronger than leather, Biothane has a superior break strength. We carry a few widths including 3/8", 5/8", 3/4". Each of these sizes are durable in their own right. We have chosen to keep the 3/8" for more aesthetic accent in our line for the time being. The 5/8" and 3/4" are used more in our collars and leashes to cater to wide array of dogs.

3/8" - Break Strength of 375lbs.

5/8" - Break Strength of 625lbs.

3/4" - Break Strength of 750lbs.

More Hygienic: Especially since Covid-19, good hygienic habits are of utmost importance in our lives and it should also be for our beloved pawbies' gear too. Biothane with its low to no absorption properties keeps dirt and germs mainly at the surface, so there is a smaller chance of nasties remaining on your gear after a good wash... much like our hands. Simply wash with soap and water, and wipe dry to keep your gear clean.

Extensive Range Of Colours: One of great things about Biothane is that it is available in a variety of colours. So let’s talk about colours. Working with Biothane, I’ve made a couple of observations which I hope will help you pick a colour that suits you most.

Dark to Medium Colours:
I bring in mainly medium to dark colours because they handle much better over time. While Biothane is low maintenance, darker colours camouflage scuffs and stains that may occur over time. This has remained especially true with my personal sets.

Light Colours:
Beautiful for contrasting and for the most bit is still low maintenance. I’ve had minimal issues with light colours as well. Just clean with soap and water. However over time may look less pristine from any scuffing.

Fluorescent Colours:
In our stock, we only carry one from the fluorescent range that being the Hot Pink. It is beautiful and functions like colours except that it's colour will run onto light coloured Biothane. If you want this colour in your gear, its recommended to pair it with only dark colours.

We want your gear to be long-lasting so we typically pair all our Biothane gear with Brass hardware. Brass is not only sturdy but is rust-proof as well making it a good option during your adventures. As raw brass can dull and patina easily, we have added a layer of gold plating to give it an added protection as well as a luxe sheen to the hardware.

The only time we use zinc alloy in our gear is for our quick-release buckles. Zinc Alloy while typically lighter is not rust-proof once its gold coating is scratched away. So quick-release collars are better for city than sea use.

Standard leashes are more typical designed gear whereby the leash is fully connected together. If you want something simple or are shopping for your first leash, this would make suitable options.

Interchangeable leashes in contrast are designed in modular pieces. You have the ability to choose between 2 handle styles and 3 leash strap lengths in a variety of colours and patterns and attach them to each other to form different leash combinations. If you want something different that makes your leash collection eye catching, this is the range to look at.

Care Guide

The general beauty of Biothane is that it is low maintenance. Some maintenance tips to take note of:

Biothane Care

To clean your Biothane gear, simply wash them with soap and
water. If you want a deeper clean, you can use a soft sponge. Make sure to completely
dry your gear after.

Lighter coloured Biothane webbing are more prone to staining. A
soft eraser may help in removing or lightening the stain.

Avoid DEET products like tick and flea collars to get in contact
with Biothane as it degrades the quality of the webbing.

Hardware Care

Raw Brass:

Brass does not rust but will oxidize over time producing a patina which gives your hardware a duller appearance. If you prefer to have your brass hardware looking shiny, buffing with a jewelry polishing cloth will
temporarily bring back it's lustre. Exposure to salt water also speeds up
the dulling process so it is always good to rinse with fresh water and dry thoroughly after your adventure. Oxidization is inevitable but you
can slow down the process with the steps above.

Gold Coated Brass:

With a layer of gold coating over brass hardware, it adds a layer of protection to the brass hardware from oxidising, keeps it shiny and prolongs the effects of
patina from staining the Biothane webbing.

Polishing is not advised for coated brass. Abrasion can affect the coating overtime however it does not affect the durability of the
hardware.

Snap Hook Maintenance:

Sand and debris may get stuck in the Snap Hook's spring enclosure
during beach adventures. Wash with clean water to remove any debris.

If a snap hook seems stiff, apply a drop of sewing machine or
bicycle oil into the spring enclosure. Click the snap hook a couple of times
and it will help lubricate the spring. Clean any excess oil.

Each screw is carefully tightened during assembly (gear made from October 2021 onwards has been glued), however it is recommended to always
inspect your gear and re-tighten with a flat-head screw driver if/when necessary. We definitely want you and your pawby to experience a good time with
our gear, thus we recommend supervision during use.

It is recommended to spot clean.

As for button longevity, do not force open. Always open by positioning fingers next to button.

It is recommended to spot clean or light hand wash.

For bandanas with heat transfer vinyl, do not iron directly.

All Biothane gear includes a limited lifetime warranty. We believe in the durability of our products however, should you experience any hardware failure from snap hooks, buckles, d-rings and screws, we will repair them for you at no extra charge.
